SONiA:

SONiA was a favorite of the late Vicki Santa (longtime WMNF station manager). The name of the main air studio in WMNF's new building is ”The Vicki Santa Memorial Studio.” SONiA gave a live performance in the studio during the naming dedication ceremony. Here’s a video from the dedication. It’s a wee bit grainy & there are a few sound quirks – but it’s well worth watching:

There are three concerts in April that I want to tell you about ( so much for cutting back).. The first is happening this Sunday at the UU Dome. Sorry about the late notice, but it has just now materialized .
The other two are South Tampa House Concerts: Wed April 18, 8pm. The Fabulous SONiA! www.disappearfear.com And Wed April 25, 8pm, The irascible & fabulous Panama Red. I’ll be delighted to take your RSVPs for either or both of the house concerts. With the UU concert this Sunday, all you gotta do is just show up.. And i hope you will do just that! Also . let me mention about the church service this coming Sunday – fyi – The group that is appearing in concert at 1pm, will also be participating in the church service as guest musicians (church service is from 11 till noon. )

Organizers of the “Concerts in the UU Dome” music series are pleased to present S O U L (Singers Of United Lands) – Sunday April 1st -- (No Foolin’ ) . Please note: This concert will start at 1 pm & is only scheduled to last approximately 1 hour. Point being – please be aware that the length of the concert is shorter than the norm – so plan accordingly (hint – dont be late).
S.O.U.L. is a touring group of four professional singers from four different continents. S.O.U.L.’s mission is to develop international and cultural relationships through vocal music from around the world. An amazing player on 6 &12 string guitars and harmonica, the affable Paul is one of the notables and nobles of the traditional blues scene and is perhaps the greatest living exponent of the East Coast and Texas fingerpicking and slide guitar styles. A smooth and superb stylist, singer/songwriter and instrumentalist, he deserves a place at the table with today's best traditional blues practitioners. He recorded his first album in 1968, having been significantly influenced by both the rural blues tradition and the folk music revival of the 1960s. He has never recorded with electric guitar, hewing steadfastly to a traditional ethic with his acoustic playing.

Michael Dan Ehmig, David Muse & Sal Belloise will be at a South Tampa House Concert (Westshore/Gandy area) on Fri Dec 16th. 7:30 doors. 8:00 concert.

The word “legendary” may be overused – but in this instance methinks it’s warranted.
These legendary musicians are getting together for a rare (maybe first ever) house concert. Sorry about the short notice but I’ve always heard that one best strike while the iron is hot. So I “struck” & we’re having ourselves a concert featuring the subject threesome. (Thanks to Irene Brandow for helping to make this happen.) $20 is the suggested donation (100% of which will go to the musicians). Space is limited . RSVPs are requested. MICHAEL DAN EHMIG has written songs performed by the likes of Melanie, Joe Cocker, Lita Ford, Meatloaf, Deanna Carter, Chris Ledoux, Omar & The Howlers, and others. In addition to being a fine songwriter, he is also a mighty fine (FINE!) performer. I couldn’t find many on-line links – but –I’ve personally seen Michael on stage first-hand. Trust me. He’s the real music deal.


DAVID MUSE, as an original member of Firefall, helped craft the band’s unique sound. This sound resulted in gold and platinum albums and chart-topping singles (You Are The Woman, Goodbye, Just Remember I Love You, and Strange Way). The band’s success led to around the world tours with the likes of Leon and Mary Russell, The Doobie Brothers, The Band, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Beach Boys and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Since the dissolution of Firefall in 1981, David has performed with numerous national and regional acts, including The Marshall Tucker Band. He has also pursued several solo projects with his latest being David Muse's Tonal Alchemy . In 2008 he was a part of a Firefall reunion concert in Boulder, Colo. By the way, Carrollwood’s own JIM MASON, Firefall’s original producer, was also part of that reunion .



SAL BELLOISE was weaned on vocal harmonies of the late psychedelic era (Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, James Taylor). Sal’s guitar style is steeped in those psychedelic sounds, mixed with the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, and flavored with the warm southern nights of Clearwater Beach. Sal writes from the heart, with uplifting notes and stories to which people can relate. His music has been heard on independent radio in the U.S., U.K., and abroad. Sal appeared with headliner Billy Dean at the 2010 Florida Folk Festival. Folks in the audience gave Billy a very warm welcome. They also did likewise for Sal. Trust me. I was there. HE WOWED US!

Per English Dance & Song: .... Jabbour and Perlman together play as if controlled by two halves of the same brain....

Per Sing Out!: .... Jabbour and Perlman are among the most articulate musicians that old-time music has to offer.... Aside from their own distinctive talents as musicians, the fact that both have spent much of their careers as field collectors and observers enables them to understand the tunes as a vital part of the culture that produced them, and not just as cool pieces of music....

KEN PERLMAN has been performing on the folk circuit since the late '70s. He has toured internationally and is a pioneer of the 5-string banjo style known as Melodic Clawhammer. He is considered one of the top Melodic Clawhammer players in the world! Ken is also a master fingerstyle guitarist.

Per Bluegrass Unlimited: Ken's significant contribution to acoustic guitar styles should not be overlooked. He is adept at old-time blues, ragtime and just plain folk. His specialty is Celtic and Southern U.S. fiddle tunes arranged for fingerpicking. These tunes are played with a sparkling attack and active bass line, which gives them a sound that has been described as being reminiscent of Renaissance- and Baroque-era lute music.

ALAN JABBOUR was born in 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida. A violinist by early training, he put himself through college at the University of Miami playing classical music. While a graduate student at Duke University in the 1960s, he began documenting oldtime fiddlers in the Upper South. Documentation turned to apprenticeship, and he relearned the fiddle in the style of the Upper South from musicians like Henry Reed of Glen Lyn, Virginia, and Tommy Jarrell of Toast, North Carolina. He taught a repertory of oldtime fiddle tunes to his band, the Hollow Rock String Band, which was an important link in the instrumental music revival in the 1960s.

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1968, he taught English, folklore, and ethnomusicology at UCLA in 1968-69. He then moved to Washington, D.C., for over thirty years of service with Federal cultural agencies. He was head of the Archive of Folk Song at the Library of Congress 1969-74, director of the folk arts program at the National Endowment for the Arts 1974-76, and director of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress 1976-99. Since his retirement, he has turned enthusiastically to a life of writing, consulting, lecturing, and playing the fiddle.
