Gloria Loves Music (Oct 27, 2011)

******************************************************
A. TWO CONCERTS THIS WEEKEND: Altho I’m not personally involved in the planning of these two concerts, I’d like to help spread the word. (1) Singing Tree at the Univ of Tampa tomorrow night. (2) Mean Mary at a condo concert in Treasure Island Sat night.

(1) SINGING TREE. (Lloyd Goldstein & Ray Belanger) FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Fri October 28, 2011, 7:30 pm, Sykes Chapel, University of Tampa. Per Lloyd: The New and beautiful Sykes Chapel at UT has amazing architecture and acoustics. We will play a full program with extra solo pieces from Lloyd’s personal repertoire used in his work at The Moffitt Cancer Center. Lloyd is a professor of Double Bass at UT and this concert is Free to the public. Please join us for our first performance in this wonderful new chapel. Info: Lloyd at 813.390.4187. http://lloydgoldstein.com/?page_id=14 .. Quick plug from me. Lloyd on double bass & Ray on hammer dulcimer not only present sublime music, their friendly funny chit chat between themselves and the audience makes for a very very enjoyable performance.

(2) Mean Mary Condo Concert. Sat Oct 29, 2011. Treasure Island. Shelly is the contact. RSVPs are required. Shelley sez she still has room for more. Shelley’s contact info is at Mary’s website.
http://meanmary.com/tour.html If you’re not familiar with Mary, please check out some of her youtubes. Banjo. Fiddle. Guitar. Vocals. Songwriting. Creativity galore.

B. Gloria’s Cancellations: Beth McKee Trio won’t be @ the UU Dome in December. Small Potatoes (aka Spuds) won’t be @ a South Tampa House Concert in November. Hopefully both concerts will be rescheduled in the not so distant future. (Beth has a CD release concert tomorrow night at the Plaza Theater. A big ta–do is planned. We’ll have our own ta-do at the Dome later ) (Rich from Small Potatoes advised that unfortunate circumstances had caused them to cancel their Florida tour this year – but they hope to reschedule next year.)

C. “My” Nov Concerts which ARE Still Happening. Please give me a shout with your RSVPs for the South Tampa House Concerts. Also – please get your advance tickets for the UU Dome concert at the church website.)
*****************************************************************************************

D. Joe Craven/Jon Shain UU DOME CONCERT Recap. The Joe Craven & Jon Shain Concert at the UU Dome last Friday night was one for the record books. Jon Shain will be returning to Tampa in December. We have a South Tampa House Concert planned for Thur Dec 29. Thanks to Doug Travers for posting these two videos from the Dome concert:

E. Mean Mary SOUTH TAMPA HOUSE CONCERT Recap. We had a really super South Tampa House Concert last night with Mean Mary. Mary is so talented & charming & on & on. There was an x-tra special treat too. Rebecca Zapen was in the house & Mary invited Rebecca to the “stage.” (yep. we have a stage.. sort of.) Rebecca obliged and performed two of her songs for us. Very nice! ( Rebecca is a busy bee. Ck her schedule here: www.zapen.com )

We also had some newcomers in the house last night, one of whom was trying to figure out what the heck was going on. “Who organized this? Whose house is this?” I explained that I organized it but that it was Craig’s house. I further explained that altho Craig & I were a couple that I lived down the street in my own house. To which he exclaimed: “Two houses. That’s a great idea! Now I’ve just gotta figure out how to convince my wife to get her own house.” : – )

F. Phil Lee South Tampa House Concert (Sun Nov 6) www.phillee1.com

A personal plug from yours truly – me. I’m a HUGE Phil Lee fan. He’s at the top of my favorite musicians list. If you come out to see him, I think you’ll understand why.

While I was in Nashville recently, I picked up the Oct 13-19, 2011, edition of the Nashville Scene where I found a writeup by Jim Ridley in the Critics Pick section about a concert with the Twenty-Eights (a Chuck Berry tribute band) & the opener PHIL LEE: “..... The Twenty-Eights live show is one of the most fun you’ll see all year – something we could say just as easily of their opening act, Phil Lee, whose You Should Have Known Me Then remains our favorite singer-songwriter album of the Aughts. To have them together – it’s as if Christmas arrived two months early. “

Phil in fine form at The Mad Hatter’s Iced Tea Party

“ The Don Rickles of disenfranchised nashtwang...”

Phil Lee – one man, one guitar and a bag of great songs about love and death, misplaced faith, discarded spaceships, hard times - and the funny side of all that. Guaranteed to please!

Sun Nov 6. 5:00 Doors. 5:30 Concert. $15-$20 suggested donation for Phil. Send me your RSVP & I’ll provide the address, etc.

“... stylistically versed, lyrically learned and immensely quick-witted...” Per Walter Tunis/The Musical Box Blog
"Combines social conscience of Woody Guthrie with the twisted fury of Jerry Lee Lewis" Per Associated Press Music Critic
"The Don Rickles of disenfranchised nashtwang strikes again...Lee presents himself as a lovable, if formerly dangerous, rapscallion. Skirting genre boundaries between rock, soul and country with his music and writing lyrics that knock right through walls of taste, decency and political correctness without ever landing him in a punk-rockish, spittin' for show camp." Per Peter Cooper, Nashville Tenessean, reviewing Phil’s Mighty King of Love .

Hows about a traveling mini-fest? Doors for the Phil Lee South Tampa House Concert is set for 5:00 with concert at 5:30. The reason for the strange timing is that Rod MacDonald will be in an early afternoon concert at the Jan Platt Library – which is about 8 minutes from the house . Rod’s concert begins at 2 & should be over by 4:30ish.

http://host7.evanced.info/hillsborough/evanced/eventcalendar.asp

If one were to so choose, one could attend Rod’s concert at the library & then drive down to the house and attend Phil’s concert. A great double whammy. Sounds like a swell idea to me! Perhaps Rod will stop by the house too (altho I’m not sure about that).

MEAN MARY IS COMING TO TOWN! (Truth is she’s not all that mean)

Extraordinarily talented Nashville recording artist, vocalist, guitarist, fiddler, and what she does with a banjo borders on impossible. She is an endorsing artist for Deering Banjos!

When she is not laboring on her Nashville TV show, producing music for herself and other artists, producing shows and videos, or co-writing a novel trilogy about the music world, she is constantly touring . She has recorded 12 CDs, her latest being WALK A LITTLE WAYS WITH ME.

Check her out on YOUTUBE.

(Jim is weird Al Yankovic’s guitarist. He is also a masterful slack key guitarist & will be giving us an evening of beautiful Hawaiian slack key guitar music – plus perhaps we’ll have a little hula dancing too)

jim "Kimo" West: “ .... It's been said often that there are really only two kinds of music; good and bad. Jim West makes good music."-Richard Bennett, Mark Knopfler Band.

"Jim West’s new recording continues his Slack Key explorations in his unique and beautiful style, and in various tunings, including two of his own invention, further accentuating his own sound" -George Winston. pianist/ guitarist.

"James "Kimo" West captures the spirit and essence of ki ho`alu in his work - an extraordinary talent!"
-Ozzie Kotani, ki ho 'alu master .

ABOUT JIM: Best known as long-time guitarist for multi-Grammy-winning musical satirist, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Tampa native, Jim “Kimo” West presents a program of eclectic ki ho ‘alu (slack key”guitar) music.
With roots in early 19th century Hawaii, Ki ho ‘alu is one of the world’s most interesting acoustic music traditions West’s musical roots can be traced back to the Tampa area where he first picked up a guitar at age 12. At age 16 after graduating from King High School and shortly before entering USF, Jim played his first paying gig. He subsequently played in numerous bands in the Tampa Bay area before eventually seeking broader musical horizons in Los Angeles. It was there where he met musical satirist “Weird Al” Yankovic and joined his band. Over the years Weird Al (with his band), has toured world-wide and has been awarded platinum records and Grammys.
In 1985 during a trip to Hawaii, Jim became entranced with the lilting sounds of the slack key guitar . His first CD, “Coconut Hat,” was released in 1999. It was followed by “Slack Key West,” “Kimo-Style,” and “Kimo’s Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas, ” all instrumental collections of original material. His New CD, “Na Lani O Maui-Maui Skies,” is being released this fall.

Kimo (which is “James” in Hawaiian) is a two-time winner of the LA Treasures Award from the Los Angeles Dept of Cultural Affairs for his efforts in bringing slack key guitar to a wider audience. He is also the recipient of the Hawaii Music Award and a Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian “Grammy”) nominee.
Jim travels to Hawaii regularly to play at legendary slack key festivals. We’re delighted that he is bringing Hawaii to us.
