Doug MacLeod is a singer-songwriter in the American tradition.
He is a traveling artist that writes and sings original songs
that are based on his own life and experiences. He
learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived
the life and carries forward a valuable tradition.
He is known for his superb songwriting, guitar wizardry, warm
soulful vocals, wit and unforgettable live performances.
At the heart of this is his knack for storytelling,
bringing characters-from the faceless to the
legendary-to strikingly real life.

Per George Willet of the Suncoast Blues Society:
Doug is an amazing character!

NOMINATED FOR TWO 2012 BLUES MUSIC AWARDS.
BEST ACOUSTIC ARTIST
BEST ACOUSTIC ALBUM -Brand New Eyes

At the heart of this is his knack for storytelling,

His songs have been covered by many artists including
Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker and
Eva Cassidy. He has co-written songs with Dave Alvin
and Coco Montoya. MacLeod's songs have been
featured in many TV movies and the hit show In
the Heat of the Night. Two of his songs are on
Grammy nominated albums by Albert King and Albert Collins.

“Aside from being one of the finest guitar players
in the business, MacLeod really connects with his audience.
His sets are more than music. They are "homegrown
lessons" in life and love. MacLeod is one of the finest
songwriters, storytellers and performers in the blues.
In a world intoxicated with electric-everything MacLeod is
preserving a lost art... A must for any serious fan
of the blues and any soul who needs the healing of the blues.”

SOUTH TAMPA HOUSE CONCERTS
PRESENTS
Suncoast Blues Society
SAM PACETTI
THE RETURN OF SAM PACETTI: Sunday August 26, 2012 @ 3pm.
It was almost a year ago that  Sam last  did a concert at the house
We’re tickled that he’s returning. Please give me a shout w/your RSVPs.

(this is a medley of Sam’s music from a South Tampa House Concert a few years ago
 – courtesy of Ted Wray )
SAM PACETTI has achieved a dazzling command of the steel-string guitar. Not only does Sam play well - he sings well too. Plus he's also a songwriter and includes orginals in his music mix. A mesmerizing live performer, Sam seamlessly melds head-spinning guitar pyrotechnics and raw emotion into one breathtaking package. Tradition and innovation neatly balance in Sam's music, the whole infused by a relentless intelligence. Martin Simpson and Merle Travis are touchstones, and while there are strong elements of the Leo Kottke/John Renbourn school of guitar wizardry throughout his work, there is a powerful raw emotionality evident as well - an earthy sensuality more reminiscent of a Greg Brown or a red-dirt blues master than of a musical academic.

"I AM A CUBAN SANDWICH"  TO NEW YORK (See Below).

WHAT: I AM A CUBAN SANDWICH

STARRING: Richard DiPietra

WRITTEN BY: Mary Ellen and Richard DiPietra

WHEN: Wed. July 25. 7:30 doors. 8:00 Play.

HOW MUCH: Donation - Whatever your wallet will allow
(100% of which is for the DiPietras)

RSVPS ARE REQUIRED. Space is limited.

Description excerpts per Creative Loafing: The enduring and popular local play by Mary Ellen and Richard DiPietra (depicts) a nostalgic day in the life of old Ybor City. Actor/writer Richard DiPietra, a Tampa native, harks back to his Tampa upbringing ... (He takes us ) on a journey through the physical and cultural life of Ybor City. Not the Ybor of today, with its bar scene and late-night revels, but what Ybor was before time and Interstate 4 cut through the heart of a very special place. DiPietra has looked back and blended his true remembrances with touches of fiction to create a... heart-warming look into the human experience of growing up in a melting pot that simmers with the smell of Spanish Bean Soup and fresh baked Cuban Bread - the kind that has a palm frond in it.

Per Richard DiPietra: I am a Cuban Sandwich is going to New York. Forget about Broadway, we're going to Chenango, baby! A lovely theatre in Greene, NY, and then points north. Your help would be greatly appreciated and does count fully towards your Karma account. Thanks!

Per Mary Ellen DiPietra: We have been invited to do a mini-tour of upstate NY. We will be at the Chenango River Theater in Greene, NY, on August 6, and the Depot Theater in Westport, NY, on August 8. We are asking for help to get us there! We will be ambassadors de Ybor and are bringing our wonderful sister Maggie Council DiPietra's music and Ferdie Pacheco's art with us. We will spread the word to our northern friends and family about what a beautiful place this was and always will be.

***Per Me: My partner Craig Reller & I recently hosted an enjoyable, intriguing, & successful "Lets Help Send Ronny Elliott to Okemah” Concert (Woody Guthrie Free Folk Fest). When I read that the DiPietras were spreading the word that they could use help with taking their Cuban Sandwich play to New York, I thought: This sounds like a fantastic opportunity to bring theater into the concert room and in so doing hopefully add a few $ to the DiPietras’ travel fund.  I hope you’ll agree and will get back to me ASAP with your RSVP.

OKEMAH OR BUST (Woodyfest)

LETS SEND RONNY TO OKEMAH – SOUTH TAMPA HOUSE CONCERT

FEATURING: RONNY ELLIOTT. www.ronnyelliott.com

Ronny has once again been invited to perform at the wonderful
Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival in Okemah, OK,  which takes
place July 11-15. The audience doesn't pay to attend. The
musicians don't get paid to perform. They do it for the love of what
Woody stood for and the honor of being invited to participate in the
festival. This year will be a celebration of Woody’s 100th birthday.
This is a perfect festival for Ronny.  Craig & I have attended the
festival in the past and we’ve seen first hand just how much those
folks in Okemah appreciate & love our Ronny & vice versa.

Lets get together & enjoy Ronny's great music &
send Ronny to Okemah with some spending money in his pocket.

SOUTH TAMPA HOUSE CONCERT – NEXT WED!
METHINKS I’D BEST START SPREADING THE WORD
LARRY MANGUM. WED. JUNE 6. 7:30 doors. 8:00 concert.
If you want to attend (and I hope you do), please give me a shout .
(p Photos by Gail Carson
(Gail has posted 532 photos from this past weekend’s Fla Folk Fest to her facebook page – including these two of Larry: https://www.facebook.com/gail.carson.75/photos )
LARRY MANGUM

For over 100 years somebody in Larry's family has been playing music. Mom Kate was Randy Travis' guitar teacher and Uncle Homer was a member of the legendary WBT Briarhoppers! As for Larry, he himself has been at it for the past 40 years or so and has about 3000 performances under his belt, including appearances with the likes of Billy Joe Shaver, Vassar Clements, Alabama, Waylon Jennings, Martina McBride, Roger McGuinn, The Texas Playboys, et al.

His most recent appearance was at the 60th Annual Florida Folk Festival which took place this past weekend. (I was there - a fine time was had by all )

Altho a North Carolina native, Larry has been a Floridian since 1970. Suffice it to say - after years of high quality performances around our fair state at festivals, theaters, taverns, country clubs, and honky tonks, Larry has become a very popular Florida performer !
(Did somebody mention “Honky Tonks?” )
*****************************************

RIP DOC WATSON: Speaking of the Florida Folk Festival - Doc was a featured performer in 1996. A podcast of that performance can be found here:
Doc also appeared at the 2002 Suwannee Springfest. I remember watching his performance with my granddaughter Katelyn who was about age 7 at the time. I whispered to Katelyn that Doc was blind. She balked. “No he isn’t.” After his set was over & she observed that he was being helped off the stage, she conceded “Well – he’s only blind in one eye. Otherwise, how could he play the guitar like that?”
Per Randall Roberts, Chicago Tribune: His loss of eyesight had not only sharpened his hearing, but filled with light the conduit that connected his brain to his fingertips. http://tinyurl.com/cf8td9x

Gloria Loves Music (May 7, 2012)

My concert calendar can be found here:

Tues. May 15. 8pm. South Tampa House Concert featuring  Australian singer-songwriter
                                  CHRIS PICKERING.

(Fisherman’s Daughter - good song)

(this one’s good too.)

Quoting a recent CD review on the No Depression website by Terry Roland:
“ There’s something of an irresistible déjà vu that happens when, you first listen to Chris Pickering’s latest and finest album to date, Work of Fiction. The Australian singer-songwriter and Nashville resident, who has yet to turn 30, calls to mind McCartney’s melodic side of The Beatles and latter day adventurous bands like Oasis, but it’s not that he calls to mind an earlier era in a way that invites nostalgia. It’s quite the opposite.

He brings the craft of song and record together in an immediate way that used to be common place when the artist dominated the direction of their music in the studio. For such a musically complex work, it’s remarkable Chris was able to forge such a simple and clear and straight forward sound.”

ABOUT AMY CAROL WEBB : Amy is a well known, crowd-pleasing Contemporary Singer-Songwriter-Songweaver. Although Amy now resides in Miami, she grew up in Oklahoma and traces her heritage back to Native Americans through two Great-Grandmothers. When Amy sings her dynamic song "I Come From Women," one can always count on a rousing roar of approval from the audience.

Amy started singing at age three and was on the stage by age five. By age 14 she was composing and performing her own songs. After college, she went to California where she toured with The New Christy Minstrels, the New Seekers, and her own band. She later took a hiatus to raise her sons.

After moving to Florida and resuming her music career, she become a crowd favorite at various Florida music festivals and concert venues.
Per audience member David following an “electrifying” concert: "The 'storm' from Oklahoma was powerful tonight. When Amy Carol Webb is charged, the room is electrified and the pulse of the audience beats with a rhythm that you can feel from top to bottom.... Amy continues to grow; and her timing, voice and verse were very impressive as she sang new songs to an audience thirsting for more..."

Per Miami New Times: "Torch, folk, country, rock; name the style of song and Amy Carol Webb can write it, play it and sing it. Her presence is so charismatic that no other musicians seem necessary."

SONiA:

SONiA was a favorite of the late Vicki Santa (longtime WMNF station manager). The name of the main air studio in WMNF's new building is ”The Vicki Santa Memorial Studio.” SONiA gave a live performance in the studio during the naming dedication ceremony. Here’s a video from the dedication. It’s a wee bit grainy & there are a few sound quirks – but it’s well worth watching:

ABOUT SONiA:
SONiA (Rutstein aka disappear fear) writes and performs captivating songs which confront the hypocrisies and biases of our culture. She does this, however, without beating us over the head. Instead, she brings us a positive message of openness, optimism and LOVE.

Per Atlanta LGBT newspaper, The Georgia Voice: "Quirky and smart, a poet with a guitar, SONiA is a master of crafting songs that make you want to simultaneously dance, sing and change the world."

Whether performing in the Opera House in Sydney, or the Open House in Jerusalem

Singing in Hebrew, Spanish, Arabic and English, SONiA's powerful honesty touches people of varied social and ethnic backgrounds, especially those moving toward a positive world vision.

SONiA is a crusader for countless causes and issues (children - women - health - GLBT – hunger - you name it) for which she frequently headlines fundraising concerts. Her independent record label donates 18% of every download to the United Nations World Food Programme.

SONiA has been the recipient of numerous awards, among which:

The GLAMA Award for Female Artist of the Year (GLAMA = Gay/Lesbian American Music Awards );
